  Not Just a Hero

Jason, who became a household name, if not following the infamous Bali Bombings, certainly did on Friday 6th June 2003 at Telstra Dome making a return to AFL football. Most genuine football supporters would have shed a tear that night. Not so on Sunday {29th June 2003} when Jason with his wife Nerissa were special guests at the Kangaroo's breakfast held in Perth prior to their game against the Eagles. Three hundred supporters in attendance listened to Jason tell the accounts of the last eight months of his life. A very humble man who probably doesn't realise exactly what he has accomplished over the last few weeks. A man who almost lost his life, who spends much of his time remembering and being more concerned about other victims and their families, than himself. A man who for a while was more concerned about letting down the North Melbourne Football Club and his Kangaroo team mates than his own well being. A man who saved two other Australians on that devastating night before succumbing to pain, a man who returned to the highest level of football, as he felt it was his obligation to his team mates and many support groups.

Jason praised Mick Martyn, nursing staff, the Australian Government, RAAF and Wayne Carey's two sisters. He also praised the Indonesian Police for their quick actions, which resulted in arrests being made. Jason McCartney is an Australian hero who has genuinely been to hell and back and wishes only to be known as an ordinary person. Jason and Narissa deserve an ordinary life, with special praise.

Surely, Jason McCartney must be a candidate for Australian of the year.

Note from the Web Master:

On Sunday 29th June 2003, I was in attendance at the Kangaroo's breakfast. As those who know me would know, my husband Ian and son Marc are one eyed about their beloved Kangaroo's. Through their membership I was given the unique opportunity to meet Jason and Nerissa. They truly are the most remarkable Australians I have had the pleasure of meeting.
