Maggies On a Roll!

By: Lois Thomas

The Coorow Latham Magpies secured a powerful 48 point win over gallant Mingenew Bulldogs at Coorow.  At times during the game the Bulldogs mounted challenges, but the Magpies responded on each occasion to enjoy victory 18-15 [123] to 11-9 [75].

Mingenew, kicking with a good breeze jumped away in the first quarter to lead by 14 points at quarter time.  However the Magpies responded with their use of the breeze to keep the Bulldogs goal less and kick 7 of their own.  At half time the Magpies enjoyed a 34-point lead.

In the third term Mingenew rallied and with the wind no longer a factor outscored Coorow Latham.  With Murray Thomas at centre Half-forward converting possessions generated by midfielders Josh Starick and Craig Storer, while Nic Duane was keeping Magpie key forward Wes Morcombe quieter. Magpie Coach Harold Wass moved full back Damien Helliwell into attack and the move paid dividends with Helliwell converting late goals to restore the Magpies lead.

In the last term, the Magpies responded and with Chris Latham winning possessions in midfield and Damien Helliwell a potent forward target, they kicked away.

With the game played at a frenetic pace on a very hot day, Mingenew should be pleased with their effort. Luigi Moreschi was a welcome return for Mingenew rebounding from defence all day. Mingenew will be looking to veteran player Mick Kerr's return to a key position. Coorow Latham have young players including Gavin Kerr and Chris Helliwell holding down key positions and growing in stature with every game.  Indeed Coorow Latham currently have the luxury of experience players including Mal Just and Todd King playing relatively minor rolls in a team full of confidence.
