Coorow / Latham Snatch Second Spot

By: Lois Thomas

With a dominant second quarter in a wind and rain effected game, the Coorow Latham Magpies kicked away setting up a match winning lead against the Dongara Eagles in their game at Coorow.  Leading by 47 points at half time the Magpies were winners by 36 points. Coorow’s match winning second quarter, when they kicked with a strong breeze was set up by Captain Will Browne’s efforts in the ruck and pacy rovers Darren Wass and Chris Latham.  Forward Dale Fowler kicked three goals in the quarter and was well supported by Gavin Kerr, Damien Helliwell and Matt Bothe.  Dongara fought back in third quarter and with better goal shooting accuracy may have been closer at three quarter time.  Young ruckman Shaun Tunbridge exerted great influence and runners Anthony Boccardo, Colin Capewell, Jyle Yearbury and Paul Shearer were all prominent.

The top of the table clash was a hard-hitting affair as both sides were endeavouring to show their supremacy. Nakia Taylor was the focal point for an injury ravaged Bombers, as was Les Sutherland & Graham Wood for the Roos. After half-time, the Roo's stepped up a gear and with playing Coach Peter Machin leading from the front, with colossal support from David Lete and Geoff Page, the Three Springs back-line was under unwavering pressure and unable to slow the bombardment at goals by Wood (7) and Sutherland (6). With this loss Bombers slipped out of second spot for the first time this season and with injuries to Groves (hamstring); Michael (facial); Auld (shoulder); Bussenschutt (ankle); Mutter (leg); Thomas (back); McGree (hamstring) and Mallard (arm), Bombers will now be looking to re-group and regain their previous form.

At Morawa, prior to the League Match, League President, Mr. Kerry Mutter on behalf of the North Midlands League accepted a sponsorship cheque from Mr. John Carstairs of CBH. The congregated group of players and supporters held a minute's silence in memory of Mrs. Alice Campbell, Life Member and Stalwart of the Mingenew Football Club. With the Official proceedings over, play commenced. Morawa Tigers had their supporters buzzing when at the end of the first quarter; they led by 3-points, however, the Mingenew Bulldogs soon exerted their authority over the game running out 139-point winners. In a top of the table Reserves clash the Coorow Latham Magpies hit the front only in the last quarter to snatch victory over the Dongara Eagles. This game had many highlights and pleased the good crowd on a day better suited to ducks. Carnamah/Perenjori completely outclassed a undermanned Three Springs while Mingenew Bulldogs were too strong for Morawa.
